In the Wake of Orlando, Why Storytelling Matters

June 15, 2016

Hello Lovelies,

My heart has been heavy all week, seeing the wake of Orlando filling my newsfeeds, seeing the stories of the lives that were lost, and seeing new stories coming out that make me weep.

A horrible tragedy that we should unite behind as a country, has divided us again. And as Lincoln said, a house divided against itself cannot stand.  I fear for America if we continue as we have. Because if we remain divided, then we will fall.

This tragedy should be a time for us to unite in support for those beautiful lives that were lost, without regard for their sexual preference, gender, race or political views.

Instead we are divided.

By our opinions of what the President should do in this situation.

By our opinions of what caused the situation.

By our need to blame the thing that we are against: the "Christian agenda" against LGBTQ, ISIS, Gun Control, Homophobia, Racism.

And my heart breaks.

The stories we tell can unite us, or they can divide us.

And then I saw Lin Manuel  Miranda's acceptance speech at the Tony Awards (Begins at 1:44) and this is the story we need to be telling. Please, share this story. Tell this story. Unite against all the division tearing our world apart. Love is the thing that will unite us.

Until next time,
