Do I have a treat for you today, an interview with the delightfully quirky Christi Smit. Born in a field, appearing fully-grown and ready for the world. Always suspected that his parents were extraterrestrials in human suits, but could never prove it. He is horrible at promoting himself. He is also well aware of is uncanny resemblance to a hairy turnip. One of the first men to ever eat his way out of trouble, he is a lover of all things Science Fiction, and would love to be abducted by aliens one day. Although he dreads the idea of anal probing, he realizes that he might have to take one for the team to get out of the galaxy. Can be found in his study, secretly drawing unicorns with his most favorite crayons. "Who has my blue crayon?" can often be heard echoing throughout his humble home.
Welcome to An Angell's Life, Christi! How are you?
I am fine thank you, and you?
I am doing stupendous. Thank you for asking! What is the current book you are promoting?
I am currently promoting my debut novel Gamma Nine while I am in the process of writing Book 2 in the series.
What inspired this book?
My love for Science Fiction and the fantastical inspired me. But it goes so much deeper than just that. My answer could be hundreds of words long but I will try and keep it as brief as possible. My inspiration came in many forms, from my love for the genre to my hobbies as an avid video gamer and movie monster. My future wife was also one of the largest influences, her encouragement got me to put pen to paper, and my inner alien carried it further. There is still so much more to come though. I am only on my first series, having just finished my first novel, but there are many more ideas and stories I want to share. This is but the first step in a long plan of connecting with others in multiple genres and sharing my words with them.
I also draw influence from the world around me. I love that you are so brimming with ideas and excitement for writing! If you could have your book made into a movie, who would you want to direct it?
J.J. Abrams. The man brought Star Trek back to the masses and gave Star Wars the rebirth it needed. The man knows his art, and none can come close at this point.
I agree, Abrams is sort of a given for a great Sci-fi! If your book were made into a movie, who would you cast?
Nathan Fillion. If you ever watched anything he ever acted in, you would be a super fan.
OOHHH!!! I am so a super fan of Nathan Fillion! He is just amazing. What is your next project?
Book 2 in the Gamma Nine series and after the series comes to a close I have a one shot about....some things need to remain a surprise. But it is very different from the Gamma Nine novels and universe.
How do you write your books?
I am what some refer to as a free-writer. I do not plan ahead, I only get ideas as the story develops that I either use or do not use. I sometimes, like with Book 2, do not know where it will end yet. But I am excited about the journey.
The journey is half the fun of writing, am I right? Where do you come up with your stories?
Everything I hear, touch, feel or see can inspire me to write and helps my imagination come up with new things.
What is one great lesson you have learned as a writer?
Do not spread yourself too thin, unless you can excel in every project. Focus on one thing and anything connected to it. Fragmenting your mind into multiple projects is the fastest way to burn out and that will only set you back.
Sage advice, and one I struggle with constantly. So many story ideas, so little time! What is one thing you hate about being a writer?
That feeling of complete exhaustion after a good week of writing. My brain can only handle so much creativity before it starts shutting down. From Friday to Sunday I am a useless lump of matter unable to do most things except the normal routines.
If you could never write again, what would you do?
Race car driver. Obviously.
Well, of course! Tell us something unique about you:
I have three nipples. Kidding! There is nothing unique about me. I am a single voice in a chorus of millions. I am just glad to be amongst everyone, sharing stories and working together to reach more people.
Thank you so much for joining us today Christi, I think most of us will agree that you are delightfully unique in your entertaining personality!
